Homework Policy and Expectations
Plan for your child to have some kind of math homework Monday through Thursday. I like to give out homework on Mondays for the week. Your child can always work ahead as long as the work for the current day is completed.
Bi-Weekly Math 4 Today Assessments
Every other week your child will take a Math 4 Today Quiz. Math 4 Today is part of the daily warm-up work I use, and it continually spirals the grade level math curriculum, constantly previewing and reviewing math skills in a format I like. The problems get more challenging as we progress throughout the year, but I really like how Math 4 Today allows us a quick and easy way to regularly touch back on math skills throughout the year. The children will complete four warm-up problems per day (Monday through Thursday) for two weeks. Every other Friday they will take a Math 4 Today assessment that will be comprised of problems very similar to those we will have worked. The children will have a study guide to bring home every other Thursday before the assessment on Friday. Check out the pictures below to see a sample from the book.
Problem Solving
One of my favorite parts of teaching advanced content math is seeing the students hone their problem solving skills. The students will be working with many different types of problems including Continental Math League, Techniques of Problem Solving, Challenge Math, and more. They will also be participating in Continental Math League competitions which include five local school meets starting in early November. The students will get lots of opportunities to solve these types of problems individually, with partners and in cooperative groups prior to the first competition.
